I think we might have some confusion between Bijou, the now defunct movie house-sex club in Chicago, and "Bijou," a film directed by Wakefield Poole, which played where? probably in NYCity, a year or so before HIM was released, and which Al Goldstein went Gagga over in his Screw review of.
Bijou the Chicago movie theatre, and Bijou, the film directed by Wakefield Poole, are two entirely seperate different things.
I can't speak for others, but I certainly realize it's two separate things. I just thought it was a funny coincidence.

Hi. I recall seeing at least the confession and crucifixion scenes, but probably more of this movie somewhere between 1979 and 1985 in the Amsterdam gay scene in a small gay porn theater setting. I don't know precisely where, but it was either at Le Bijou, Spuistraat, Le Salon, Nieuwendijk 22, Beate Uhse Twin Cinema, or the movie space of the long defunct Viking Disco (Later Havanna Bar) in the Regulier Dwarsstraat. I have seen several films copied to VHS there, so it could very well be a VHS version, but I also remember hearing a reel rattling in the back in those places in the earlier years. I was a young university student from the Caribbean at the time, and at the time I was very impressed by those scenes, as I recall now.
More exciting news. Two new screenings have been confirmed. 1 - Gay Paree theatre, Atlanta, Georgia. March 17th - March 30th, 1975. 2 - Wood Six 1, Highland Park, Michigan. April 16th - April 22nd, 1975. Ads for these can now be found on the LMW page for the film, as well as in the most recent revision of my essay. As with the Philadelphia screening, credit goes to Billy A. Anderson for these finds.
Those with a keen eye might have noticed that the date of the Highland Park screening overlaps with another confirmed screening. The film played at the David theatre in New York from April 18th - May 1st, 1975. This means that for the first time we can confirm with some confidence that at least two prints of the film must have been made. This more or less doubles our previous estimate of this film's chance of surviving in some form.
Once again, thanks to Billy A. Anderson, we have another confirmed screening. The long-rumored San Fransisco screening has been uncovered. Taking place in February 1975, although the exact start and end dates aren't certain at this time.
Searching thru newspapers.com, I found an article from The Baltimore Sun of August 22, 1973, page 3, "Vatican Attacks Danes Over Film."
I don't see any button for attaching a copy of the article.
While the film in question is not Ed D Louie's HIM, it does relate to the (in this case true) Legend surrounding Mr. Louie's film, and the repeated rumors (some untrue) surrounding reports of announced Jesus porno films.
Again, following up on this story is a back burner project with me, but in this case, I don't see any reason to dismiss a mainstream newspaper story carried by a major wire service, and quoting from a Vatican newspaper, as an untrue rumor spread by the "religious right wing" of the USA.
But it does show the roots of such untrue rumors.
I do think I have the time to check out Jens Thorsen, to confirm that he is, or was a real film maker, and possibly find out if his proposed film, "The Loves of Jesus Christ" was ever made.
I can't recall if the Danish government yielded to the Vatican's attack or not, and might have withdrawn the subsidizing of the film.
And, I don't know exactly when Wakefield Poole first announced plans for his Bible / Scandals film, which was believed by some to have motivated Ed D Louie to make HIM, and whether this announced Danish film could have influenced either Mr. Poole and / or Ed D Louie to make their two Biblical porno films
Here is a transcription of the Baltimore Sun article of August 22, 1973
Vatican attacks Danes over film
Vatican City (Reuter)--The Vatican yesterday issued a searing attack against the Danish government for subsidizing a film on the imagined sex life of Jesus Christ.
The film, "The Loves of Jesus Christ," has received a subsidy from the Danish Ministry of Cultural Affairs and will be directed by Jens Jeorgen Thorsen.
Mrs. Thorsen, who plans to begin shooting shortly in France, has already announced that his film will be "extremely obscene."
The Vatican Daily Observatore Romano in its lengthy attack said the Danish government was guilty of "gravely offending and violating the rights of those citizens who believe in these [Christian] values."
That address in Philly is some super hipstery Apple store now. Just found that amusing. XD
It's sad that all of the single screen theatres are gone in Philly. The last one was the Art Holiday on Kensington ave. And that was a porno theatre. Actually, I'm not sure of the name because I always remember people calling it the Art Holiday. But it's listed at the Holiday Art. Dunno which is correct. It was rather infamous too. I can't find any good pics of the marquee though. I am curious if they showed gay as well as straight films. I used to live around there in the 80s. But I was too young to understand that sort of thing and was told to stay away from the place for obvious reasons. I'd think that downtown would be a better choice for weird porno films like Him though.
Were scenes of Him ever shown online? Because I kind of recall the "Jesus naked in the street" thing. But maybe I imagined it because I went to Catholic school. So the whole concept of this film would set my mind running in weird places. Or maybe it was some other film. Does anyone remember a scene actually being available or am I totally mixed up? I swear I have seen something like this. But again, I could be mistaken.
I'm intrigued by this bizarre piece of cinema. Not sure if I actually want to watch it. I mean, it's 70s porn you know? But I'd like to see it found. Hope it does turn up.

Thanks for the post, Adrastia. I was reluctantly drawn into the discussion of Ed D Louie's HIM, because in 2005, it had become the subject of very partisan debate, including the Snopes Urban Legend webpage, which, at that time, seemed to view him as an "untrue" Urban Legend.
But, some Legends, Urban or othwerwise, have real, factual things behind them. I had known about the Danish government and the protests against the film, "The Loves of Jesus," but am so busy, had not had the time until a few days ago, to check out the story, altho, in one Discussion of HIM, one writer did remember that film, and I think that Snopes should definitely include it as further proof that while, yes, there have been untrue rumors about Jesus porno films, there are some undisputed facts behind real attempts, some successful, some unsuccessful, behind such films.
I got an email back from the institute, their full response reads as follows:
"Dear Jack,
These films have not yet been digitized so we don’t have much information about it. We are currently working with the university’s media digitization and preservation initiative. Film is the most challenging category of materials and we hope to begin the digitization process in 6 to 9 months. Once this film is digitized we can take a look at it to give you an idea.
Best,
Shawn"
Well, 6-9 months is quite the wait, but at least the film being digitized means it won't be lost to physical decomposition. I guess we'll see what they have to say in 6-9 months. In the meantime, I'd suggest we follow vamp1597's idea and try to find as much as we can about the reel's origins. My hunch is that this isn't the only one in the world. I have nothing to back that up, but a hunch is a hunch.
What I can back up is the fact that Hand in Hand Films sold 8mm copies of some of the features they showed at the 55th Street Playhouse. [The Village Voice - March 21, 1974]
Now, trying to hunt down a copy of that brochure mentioned seems like a pretty good place to start. Add to that the fact that the film also seems to go by the title 'Why is Everybody Talking About "Him"'. So far, we've been searching for 'Him', not 'Why is Everybody Talking About "Him"'. Perhaps we've been barking up the wrong tree with the title, looking for it under its original name when we should've been looking for the alternate.
Hey. I found this thread earlier today, and noticed it's right about when they said the film could be copied. Do we have any updates on this? Would that even be helpful to the search anymore?

The institute stated the digitization would start around this time, but you need to keep in mind that they're digitizing a large amount of their film and videos, not just this particular reel. I'd imagine they have a lot of material to get through, and these things take time, so I wouldn't expect their digitization to be finished for the moment. The institute hasn't gotten back in touch with me as of writing, but I will be asking them for an update a few months from now when it can realistically be assumed that the film will be digitized.

This is true. I want to know how that would affect the search. Would we call it a day if/when we get it, or do we want to keep going with the background of the film?

There is still a lot of mystery regarding the background of the film, so I don't think the search efforts would stop there. Besides, even if this reel does contain footage, it almost certainly won't be the entire film, so there will still be an ongoing search for that.

Alright. I'll be standing by for information. If I find anything I'll let you guys know.
