Whats a piece of lost media that will never get found

My question is, how exactly do they "destroy" supposed lost media? Do they throw it in a fire, smash it to pieces with a hammer, or what? I'm genuinely curious.

Song of the South was released outside the US after it was banned. It’s nowhere near lost.

The fully unedited X-rated version of Cruising. Supposedly all the film of the more explicit scenes that were cut were destroyed or lost when they were shipped to another studio's warehouse and the director can't find any surviving copies of the footage.

I also doubt we'll ever see "The Fall of a Nation", the first true feature film sequel. It was made during World War I both to capitalize on the success that The Birth of a Nation had and to drum up more support for America entering the war in Europe.

True, but in Fall of a Nation, the bad guys are presumably a mix of Germans, Hungarians, and Austrians with the good guys being American soldiers. So I get the feeling the film was probably lost long before racism was widely condemned and its disappearance has more to do with poor archiving and the film failing to make money.

It was billed as a sequel to Birth of a Nation namely because the guy who wrote the screenplay and the novel it was based on also wrote and directed Fall of a Nation and he wanted to cash in on that newfound success and because he supported the idea of American intervention into WWI.

I am not sure if this has already been stated, but the original ending to Freaks is most likely gone forever as much as I would love to see it. The history nerd in me will also say that the alleged recordings of Lincoln giving the Gettysburg Address (if they existed at all) or the original Watergate Tapes will never be found. I am also interested in the Tombstone Thunderbird photograph but I feel that is more than likely a hoax.
