Good afternoon, all! Long time lurker, first time poster.
What I'm after is a book that I read when I was in the fourth or fifth grade, around 2004-2005. The title, author, and the names of any characters escape me, but I do remember some of the plot and a few important details.
The story revolved around a family of ghosts, whose dynamic I would describe as being similar to the Addams Family, who are hired by an agency to haunt a house. The (living) people who wanted this house haunted are the antagonists; they were looking for spirits that would have no qualms seriously hurting or killing the living family that resides in the house, but through a mix-up with the paperwork, this quirky and benevolent ghost family were sent instead. Now, the ghost family and the living family must work together to reveal the villains' true intentions.
A couple of the details I remember:
- The main ghost family consists of a mother, a father, at least two kids, and a grandparent.
- One of the members of this ghost family, a young girl of about 10 or 11, was not related to the others. The family found her shortly after she died and took her in. She knows she's not related to them, but she can't remember who she was or where exactly she came from. This is a major subplot, her finding out who she was in life and coming to terms with it.
- The agency I mentioned earlier sorts ghosts into two categories, benevolent and malevolent. I think the book might have used different terms, but I can't remember. Benevolent ghosts have green folders for their paperwork, and malevolent ghosts have red folders for theirs. The main ghost family's paperwork mistakenly got put into a red folder instead of a green one, which kickstarts the whole situation.
I hope y'all can help me find this book. I remember really liking it when I was younger and I'd love to find it again to read to the kids I babysit!
