Apparently there was a Malcolm in the Middle storyline in the third season that was never aired. Someone who apparently worked on the show mentioned this in a Reddit post.
“ Okay, here's what happened. We wrote a Francis story about him getting lost in the forest and getting rescued by a "Unabomber" type nutcase. He asks Francis to read his manifesto to hear his thoughts because he's thinking it's too crazy. Francis blows it off, but tells the guy it was great and he should continue to follow his dream. We shot it with Stacey Keach as the nut and it came out great. It was set to air... right after 9/11. We quickly pulled it out of the episde and it never saw the light of day.”
While it’s unlikely the footage is still around, it’s still worth looking into.
Now, this storyline was mentioned in the official synopsis for an episode. There’s another storyline that was apparently shelved that was included in the official descriptions about Francis’s wife and best friend not getting along; I asked the person who worked on the show about it but he didn’t seem to know anything about this one.
Additionally, a site that reviewed MITM episodes back when they were airing had several interesting comments about season 3, two in particular about the one the Francis-Eric-Piama storyline was apparently meant to be in:
“Monkey" is the mileage-upgrade season finale which was originally plotted to be just a regular episode slated for a March airing. And it shows, particularly in the obviously-rewritten Mamu segment”
“Since the series is filmed out-of-sequence, the Mamu segment was likely filmed for a different episode that was originally intended to be the proper season finale, then just incorporated into the rest of the footage”
I would definitely like to know more about this all. Season 3 is one of my favorite seasons of the show, so it would be interesting to see what was originally planned for it.
“Season Three has wound down, and it's missing at least four episodes from the original gameplan. Word around the campfire is that a specialty finale episode was planned but never shot”
