I'm just curious, lots of people have memories of "lost" commercials they've seen and they're usually from national companies or at the very least larger regional chains. Where's the love for the weird, low budget local commercials that have faded from existence? I know local commercials have a love among those who are a big fans of ephemera, and I'm sure there's lot of people like that here, given what we're talking about most of the time. So I wanna hear about some local ads you remember seeing once or twice but have never seen since?
For me, the one that has always stuck in my brain is from a car dealership in Massena or Potsdam New York, Mahoney's Auto Mall. They were/are commonly known as "No Baloney Mahoney's" and used to be somewhat of a bigger used car dealer, but had to downsize I think due to some legal money issues or other. Their TV ads were your typical weird local car dealer ads, very gimmicky and full of schlock. In 2016, they made an ad jumping on the Pokemon Go trend. They had put some poor employee in a really bad bootleg Pikachu costume and had the owner, Mahoney, talking to him and saying Pikachu himself endorsed the dealership, or something to that fact. They did at least, advertise that Pikachu would be at the dealership. It was definitely something Nintendo would slap a lawsuit on them for, if they ever found out, which I find unlikely due to how small of a dealer Mahoney was. But I think the commercial only aired once or twice, maybe a bit more but they usually didn't air their commercials more than a few times before they made a new one. It felt like a fever dream, and I remember finding the Pikachu so fucked up I went and took a picture of it on my iPod touch, and I think that iPod touch pic is the only thing left of it. I think I posted it on my Wattpad of all places, I'll have to see if I can get in there and find it again.
I'm really curious about anyone having similar incidents with a local ad, and what they remember of it. I'm sure there's hundreds of weird old local ads that are gone forever, so talking about them keeps them alive in a way.
