The ending of Kubrick's The Shining features and image of the main character, Jack Torrance, in a ballroom of sorts. Though the film is set in the 1980s, the image of Jack in the ballroom is dated 1921. This is to establish Jack as "always having been" the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel.
The truth is that Jack Nicolson's head was airbrushed into the photo. Here is a high res of the prop photo used in the movie.

- In a 1980 interview, Kubrick stated "[the] photograph [was] taken in 1921 which we found in a picture library."
- In 1985,The Complete Airbrush and Photo Retouching Manual included the original photograph, showing the man who Nicholson replaced. The book indicates that the photograph was taken in 1923, not 1921.
- A Redditor identified the previously unknown man in the original photograph as Santos Casani, a well-known London dancer.
