On May 17th of 2011, shortly before Kung Fu Panda 2 released in theaters, DreamWorks published 'The Art of Kung Fu Panda 2' under Insight Editions. The book contains and showcases various pieces of concept art and gives an in-depth look at behind the scenes for the film. However, there is a lesser known digital version of the artbook that was made available for the iPad on May 31st, 2011 and served as a partner to the physical artbook, Insight Edition's first in-house companion app.
The app itself had exclusive content such as galleries featuring rare pieces of art, storyboards, test animations and information about characters not seen in the physical artbook, all curated by Kung Fu Panda 2's production designer, Raymond Zibach. The UX designer for the app Jason Babler worked closely with Zibach to help with the curation process, his portfolio website featuring screenshots of the app's layout and design. According to Babler, he used a third party app and unfortunately does not have any of the actual files except for the screenshots. And due to Insight Edition's contract expiring with DreamWorks, the app is no longer available for purchase - much of its content now seemingly lost or scarce.
A 15 part fan documentary focusing on the character of Lord Shen preserves some concept art and information from the app, uploaded to YouTube in December of 2011 by a user named LeoandLamb.
''Shadow Puppet Prophecy'' and ''Shadow Puppet Birth'' were both done by Jason Brubaker, a visual development artist for Kung Fu Panda 2 who worked heavily on the film's opening shadow puppet art sequence. Originally only found in the app, both were later uploaded to his ArtStation in March of 2021, although the uploaded version of ''Shadow Puppet Prophecy'' differs slightly in its visual appearance.
Any assistance, leads or help in locating more content from the app or the app itself would be greatly appreciated!
