For those unaware, MF DOOM was a rapper who was quite big in underground hip-hop circles, where he was well known for albums like Madvillainy and MM.. FOOD. He passed away in 2020 so he's been gaining more traction in recent years. It would appear that sometime in the early 2000s a song of his leaked, named "Where's the Boat?". Problem is, I can't seem to find anything on it, outside of some very brief mentions.
The first one of these is in an interview with MVRemix from April 2002: www.mvremix.com/urban/interviews/mfdoom.shtml
DOOM's answer does not mention any of the songs in particular and is more of a general "it happens" type of response. Note that the other two songs mentioned ("Change the Beat" and "Is He Ill") can easily be found on the internet nowadays.
The second one is in a file called "doomography.txt" that I downloaded off Soulseek some time ago. It's a list of DOOM B-sides and features which also includes leaked songs, if the inclusions of "Change the Beat" and "Is He Ill", which are also mentioned in the MVRemix interview, are anything to go by.
None of these songs appear to be any newer than 2002, so it's a very old list. Again, everything on the list can be found online except for the mysterious "Where's The Boat?".
I cannot find any other mentions of this song on the internet. I've also checked multiple peer-to-peer programs; no song in sight.
A couple of theories I have on why this might be:
- "Where's The Boat" isn't actually an MF DOOM song but rather a mislabeled song by another artist with a similar style; after all, this was in the Limewire days of the internet where everything you downloaded had a 50/50 chance of being what you wanted. It wasn't rare to find a song labeled as being made by one artist that was actually made by another.
- Tinfoil hat territory: Someone misread the title for "Change the Beat" and assumed it was titled "Where's The Boat". It's a big stretch and very unlikely, though I wouldn't put it past someone to do this, and I could see "the beat" becoming "the boat". Someone going from "change" to "where" is much less likely, but still possible.
- "Where's The Boat" does in fact exist but is incredibly obscure.
In any case I would love for someone to shed some light on this, and more importantly some confirmation on just what the heck this song might be. MF DOOM is one of my favorite artists and ever since I found out about this it's always intrigued me.
