Does anyone remember this? I stumbled upon it on tape some years back and the theme song totally took me back. It was basically a show that gave a history of painting. And it had a catchy as heck theme song.
You've awoken a memory within me that I'd long forgotten. I remember watching this when I was around 4 years old. But I only have a very faint memory of the theme song, but I also remember my mom telling my grandma that it's a great show for children. But besides that I have no memory of the show. I'd be interested in finding out more about it.
I was obsessed with the theme song of this show as a young toddler. I vividly remembered it and recently I managed to find a ton of information about it. Unfortunately the English version is not available online but can be purchased on DVD
The English name of the show is definitely "Painting Pictures" and its original French name is "J'aime la Peinture." (I like painting)
It features pieces from the National Gallery of Canada.
It was created in 1996/97 by the company Sound Venture Productions.
There's a few episodes online in French, but none in English. I've been trying to find a video of the English theme song but it's not been uploaded.
So if someone wanted to buy it and upload it I'm pretty sure that's all it would take to stop it from being lost. :3
There's also "Artifacts" which was made by the same people and aired about the same time that was about anthropological artifacts from around the world. Also available on their site for DVD purchase. I feel like I should remember this one too but likely its theme song just wasn't as catchy. I vaguely remember it playing around the same time.
I've been struggling to find this for pretty much my whole life. It's weird I found the Lost Media wiki discussing it only after I found it myself. Just typing "painting pictures canadian tv art show" never brought up any results. I lucked out by guessing it was French and typing potential French queues in until I got lucky.
Lost "media" toy!!! Have you seen him? Let me know!
Anyway I can see the theme songs to these? And I was wondering about Artifacts ever since I stumbled upon a listing with no page for it on wiki! Good to see what it actually looked like. Looks pretty interesting!

I linked a video to the original French show which has both the opening and closing theme included. According to my memory the only difference from the English version is the lyrics. The melody's the same.
I could not find footage of Artifacts.
I'm seriously considering buying the Painting Pictures DVD to upload the English theme song. If I ever get my hands on it I will definitely share.

I recently got in contact with a Sound Venture representative to buy the DVDs of Painting Pictures through the website. While I am hopeful that he will get them to me, he told me that the DVDs will be discontinued in 2021 due to the inability to get them made anymore. As a physical media enthusiast this makes me rather upset, obviously. Especially as I also recently remembered that I had seen the sister show Artifacts! when little too, which is also impossible to find. I let him know that people would really want to see these again and suggested that the videos could be sold digitally or that they could be uploaded to a media sharing website like YouTube. But it looks like the window to buy them on DVD is quickly closing.

I hope you manage to get your hands on these! Never watched it as a kid but I like the art style and premise.
I was anxious that Neil Bregman might be upset with me for sharing these as I developed a very friendly correspondence with him when obtaining the DVDs but never had the nerve to outright tell him I intended to upload the series online but I lost my service dog to cancer this year so I've grown numb towards these sorts of anxieties and I feel it's more important that everyone who wants to see these should be able to and I got the impression he wanted this show to be appreciated by new eyes also.
I attempted to buy both seasons of Artifacts! in English too but he had lost the master. So Artifacts! is still sadly lost. The Sound Venture store has since displayed an error ("Not Found [CFN #0005]") when attempting to access so I don't think any more of their productions can be purchased from them directly.
Apologies if the MP4 for season 1 is weird. I have no clue why some programs think the video resolution is messed up but it works for me in VLC.
Shared in memory of Cazza, who somewhat resembled the dog from the painting featured in the very first episode. Love you and miss you.

I distinctly remember the Artifacts show and theme song. I don’t remember the exact lyrics but I know the chorus had some kids singing “They’re Artifacts, They’re Artifacts!”. I know for a fact that one episode was about the Spirit of Haida Gwaii which was also shown briefly in the intro.
Apologies for the bump but I wanted to I’d say that regarding “Artifacts”, I did come across this Reddit post which contains more of the lyrics to the Artifacts theme: www.reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue/s/GKWgskHati
I also found this link from the Canadian Museum of History which seems to suggest they have a VHS of Artifacts in their archive which lists 20 episodes and might be worth looking into: www.historymuseum.ca/collections/archive/3354979
